The 10 Best Cat Litters for Odour Control in Canada
1. Precious Cat Attract Problem Training Litter — Best Overall
The best overall cat litter for odour control in Canada is Precious Cat’s Attract Problem Training Litter. This litter is designed to attract cats to use the litter box, which should help if you have a kitty that seems to be picky about their current litter. It has a natural scent that has been shown to draw cats to use their litter boxes, but other than that, this litter is unscented and is 99.5% dust free. The clay litter particles are also the right size and texture for cats of all ages, and it has excellent odour control.
The only issue with this litter is that the “attracting cats” feature doesn’t necessarily work on all cats.
2. Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal Slide Cat Litter — Best Value
The best cat litter for odour control in Canada for the money is Arm & Hammer’s Clump & Seal Slide Cat Litter. It’s designed to not stick to the litter box, so the litter slides right out when you empty it. It has superior odour control, and Arm & Hammer guarantees that your home will remain odour free for up to 7 days. It’s 100% dust free and creates solid clumps for easy scooping. Plus, it’s suitable for homes with more than one cat.
The flaws are that it is scented, which some cat owners and cats won’t appreciate, and it won’t necessarily last up to the reported 7 days for odour control.
3. ÖKOCAT Super Soft Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter — Premium Choice
It’s true that premium choice can also mean expensive, but sometimes it’s worth it, like in the case of ÖKOCAT Super Soft Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter. It’s an all-natural litter that works just as well as the usual clay litter. It’s made from wood, is super soft on your cat’s paws, and is perfect for cats of all ages. The box that it comes in is recyclable, and it has a weatherproof bag inside that the litter is stored in, so you don’t have to worry about the litter getting wet (except in the way that it’s supposed to). The wood fibre is designed to reduce ammonia and waste odours, it clumps exceptionally well, and it’s 99% dust free. If you’re looking for a litter without any added chemicals or fragrances that is biodegradable and compostable, give ÖKOCAT a try!
The disadvantages are that the litter is pricey and tends to stick to the cat’s paws and track around the house.
4. World’s Best Original Unscented Cat Litter
World’s Best Original Unscented Cat Litter is unscented and made with all-natural corn, which does provide good odour control. It’s 99% dust free and low tracking, so you shouldn’t find too much litter scattered around the house. It also clumps quite well and is easily scooped, and it is all-natural, so there are no artificial ingredients or fragrances.
There are a few issues, including the fact that it’s expensive, tends to be dusty, and doesn’t clump as well as regular litter.
5. Cat’s Pride Fresh and Light Cat Litter
Cat’s Pride Fresh and Light Cat Litter is an unscented litter but provides good odour control for up to 10 days. It is 25% lighter than many other litters, making it much easier to carry and pour. This means this 15-pound container of litter is equivalent to a 20-pound container of regular litter. It’s 99% dust free, doesn’t track around the home, and clumps well, so it’s also easy to scoop.
The cons here are that it tends to stick to the litter pan and that it is a little dustier than advertised.
6. sWheat Scoop Wheat-Based Cat Litter
sWheat Scoop Wheat-Based Cat Litter is an all-natural cat litter that is made from wheat, which means it’s biodegradable and renewable. It reduces odours without using any chemicals or fragrances and has no added artificial ingredients or fragrances. It’s naturally absorbent, can clump easily for scooping, is 99.5% dust free, and is low tracking.
However, it tends to stick to the pan quite badly and can be dustier than advertised. It also doesn’t always hold up in eliminating odours.
7. Arm & Hammer Naturals Cat Litter
Arm & Hammer Naturals Cat Litter is mostly all-natural and made from corn fibres. It also contains baking soda, mineral oil, and a plant-based material that helps with clumping. It’s capable of absorbing more urine and is 50% lighter than clay litters. It’s good at eliminating odours, and it makes small clumps for easy removal and works well in multi-cat homes.
Unfortunately, it is expensive, and even though it is primarily natural, it does have an added fragrance. Additionally, the lightweight formula also means it can track.
8. Tidy Cats Glade Lightweight Cat Litter
Tidy Cats Glade Lightweight Cat Litter has what’s called an “ammonia blocker,” which eliminates cat urine smells for up to 14 days. It is about 50% lighter than most other litters, meaning this 12-pound litter is equivalent to 24 pounds, making it easier to pour. It’s 99.9% dust free, and it produces tight clumps for easy scooping.
However, it tends to track around the home, and there’s an added fragrance that you (and your cat) might find overwhelming.
9. Fresh Step Advanced Extreme Clumping Cat Litter
|Weight||18.5 x 2 lbs.|
Fresh Step’s Advanced Extreme Clumping Cat Litter is designed to fight odours on contact and for longer than most other litters. Fresh Step claims that it can keep your home odour free for up to 10 days. It is 99.9% dust free and low tracking, so there is no litter all over the house. It’s also easily scooped because the litter forms nice, hard clumps.
However, for some people, especially cats, scented litter is not a good thing, and it is also expensive.
10. Fresh Step Lightweight Extreme Cat Litter
Fresh Step Lightweight Extreme Cat Litter is a lightweight litter that comes in 15.4 pounds, which is equivalent to 22-pound litter. It is 99.9% dust free and is made with clay that forms tight clumps. This means it’s easy to scoop and locks odours away for up to 10 days. Being lightweight also makes it easy to pour.
The negatives include that like most lightweight litters, it tends to be dusty and that the added Febreze scent might be strong.
Buyer’s Guide: Selecting the Best Cat Litter for Odour Control in Canada
In this buyer’s guide, we go over a few tips that can help inform you about your choice of cat litter. You want something that both you and your cat will appreciate.
No matter how well the litter stacks up in all other areas, you’ll soon be shopping for a new one if it stinks. Your best bet is to always read the reviews. Not everyone’s experience with a litter will be the same, so look for the majority: If most people claim that the litter does a great job at eliminating odours, give it a try. Also, keep in mind that many litters that clump well also tend to reduce odours.
Purchasing cat litter with an added fragrance doesn’t necessarily mean it will do a good job of covering up your cat’s waste. In fact, the artificial scent might end up irritating you more than you might expect. Also, most cats will not appreciate a litter with an added fragrance. Some cats might even reject using the litter box altogether.
Clay litter is the most widely used and oldest material used as cat litter. It tends to do quite well at absorbing liquid and controlling odours but needs to be changed frequently. Silica gel has been a more recent entry into the cat litter market, but there has been concern about the danger of this kind of litter if it’s ingested.
Natural litters, such as paper, wheat, and corn, are great options, particularly if you’re environmentally conscious, but they aren’t always as effective at clumping and odour control. However, these might work well for you if the litter box is in an area where you won’t frequently be within smelling distance and if you change the litter often.
There’s a correlation between litters advertised as lightweight and the ones that tend to be the dustiest. If your cat has any kind of respiratory issues, you should make dust free the most crucial selling point of a litter. Having a litter that’s easy to lift and pour isn’t as important as your cat being able to breathe while digging around in their litter box. If you find the perfect litter but it tends to track, invest in a litter mat, which can help trap the excess litter that your cat throws around.
Our favourite cat litter overall is Precious Cat’s Attract Problem Training Litter. It’s formulated to attract cats to use the litter box and provides excellent odour control. Arm & Hammer’s Clump & Seal Slide Cat Litter helps your home remain odour free for up to 7 days and for a reasonable price.
Finally, our premium choice is ÖKOCAT Super Soft Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter. This all-natural litter works just as well as clay, doesn’t have added chemicals or fragrances, and is biodegradable and compostable.
We hope that all these reviews have helped you figure out what kind of cat litter you’ll try — and that your cat will appreciate your choice.
